Ampuriabrava was built in 1967. Its originality lies in the fact that it is structured around a grid-shaped network of navigable canals totalling twenty miles in length.

It has now become known as a town, with all the services and amenities of an international urban centre. It has its own small airport and 5,000 moorings, making Ampuriabrava the biggest residential marina in the world.
